Our Flag Day celebration in Sioux Falls began in 2001 . We've held the event on the second Friday of June each year. With as many at 700 children attending  our event, it is arguably one of the LARGEST Flag Day events in the nation.

Rain on Friday, June 12th 2009 caused several of our planned events for the day to be cancelled, but we still had many things to offer the crowd that braved the storm. When Mark Nelsen, one of the event organizers, was asked on Friday morning whether or not the event would happen, he quoted his good friend Gene Murphy who said "We didn't get to quit shooting in Vietnam just because of a little rain"

That was the perfect pep talk to get the volunteers ready and the crowd that joined us had a great time under the tent with a free lunch and some wonderful music from Gordy Pratt as well as a show from Steve & Burnnie from the "Burnnie The Bunny TV show". Don Branson gave free haircuts to the veterans that joined us as well. We hope you'll join us in 2010 for a bigger and hopefully dryer event!

History of Flag Day itself!
Flag Day was first observed in 1877 on the 100th anniversary of the Continental Congress' adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States. Congress asked that all public buildings fly the flag June 14.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Flag Day as a national celebration. However, the holiday was not officially recognized until 1949 when President Harry Truman signed the National Flag Day Bill.
